Tiger Woods shoots a first-round 76

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — Although he’s been on a two-year run of injuries, swing changes and poor play, Tiger Woods had plenty of reasons to be optimistic coming into The Open.

Woods, who had momentum from his last tournament at the Greenbrier, ranks the Old Course as his favorite in the world. And his practice sessions at St. Andrews also had went well.

But then he chunked his second shot into the burn at the first hole Thursday, and it all unraveled.
