After blown save, Red Sox smack 2 HRs in 10th to beat Tigers

Ceddanne Rafaela blasted a two-run homer in the 10th inning as the Boston Red Sox pulled out a 7-5 victory over the host Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

Jarren Duran doubled twice and added a solo homer in the 10th for the Red Sox, and Connor Wong supplied a double and a homer while driving in two runs.

Kenley Jansen (4-2) was credited with the win after failing to record a save in the 9th inning, and Chris Martin notched his second save.

Starter Tanner Houck pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, and had six strikeouts.

Kerry Carpenter homered and drove in four runs for Detroit, which erased a four-run deficit. Jake Rogers had a game-tying double off Jansen in the ninth.

Duran jumped on Casey Mize’s first offering of the contest and ripped a double over the head of center fielder Parker Meadows. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on another groundout, the latter from Triston Casas.

The Red Sox scored another run in the third. Romy Gonzalez led off with a single and moved to third on another Duran double. Wilyer Abreu’s sacrifice fly scored Gonzalez.

Boston made it 3-0 in the fourth when Tyler O’Neill walked, stole second and scored on Wong’s double to left.

Wong blasted his 12th homer, a solo shot, to left off Mize with two outs in the sixth. The Tigers had two baserunners in the bottom of the 6th after Matt Vierling’s one-out double and a Carpenter walk, but Houck retired the next two batters to keep the shutout going.

Detroit pulled within one in the eighth. Pinch hitter Andy Ibanez drew a walk and Vierling had a one-out single. Carpenter then drilled a Brennan Bernardino offering over the left field wall, his 14th homer.

The Tigers pushed across the tying run in the ninth when Zach McKinstry, who had singled and stole second, scored on Rogers’ double.

Rafaela’s 14th homer of the season in the 10th off Shelby Miller (6-8) landed over the left-center field wall. Ghost runner Nick Sogard also scored on the long ball. After Tyler Holton replaced Miller, Duran blasted his 21st homer.

Carpenter had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning.
