Corbin Carroll’s grand slam carries D-backs past Mets

Corbin Carroll’s second homer of the night, an eighth-inning grand slam, lifted the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 8-5 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday night at Phoenix.

The Diamondbacks loaded the bases on three walks, the last two issued by Edwin Diaz, before Carroll came to the plate with two outs and launched an 0-1 slider over the fence in right-center. Carroll, who had five RBIs in the game, has 17 homers on the year, 15 of them coming since July 7.

Joc Pederson hit a two-run homer for Arizona, which has won seven of eight games and 25 of its past 32. The Diamondbacks lead the San Diego Padres by one game for the National League’s top wild-card berth.

Harrison Bader hit a two-run homer for New York, which fell four games behind the Atlanta Braves for the NL’s final wild-card spot.

Ryan Thompson (7-3) pitched a scoreless eighth for Arizona, and Justin Martinez tossed a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

The blown save was the sixth of the season for Diaz (5-3).

New York recovered from a four-run deficit to take a 5-4 lead.

Arizona’s Eduardo Rodriguez retired the first 12 Mets he faced but walked Brandon Nimmo to start the fifth. One out later, J.D. Martinez doubled off the fence in center to drive in Nimmo from second.

Another out later, Francisco Alvarez stroked a single to score Martinez from third. Bader then jumped all over Rodriguez’s cutter and hit a 440-foot blast to left to tie the score at 4. It was Bader’s 10th of the season.

Starling Marte scored the go-ahead run in the sixth for the Mets after reaching on a bunt single against Rodriguez (2-1), stealing second and moving to third on Nimmo’s groundout.

Kevin Ginkel replaced Rodriguez to face Pete Alonso, who flied out to left. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made an outstanding one-hop throw to the plate, but Arizona catcher Adrian Del Castillo was slow to apply the tag and Marte got his right hand on the plate.

Rodriguez was charged with five runs and five hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one.

New York’s Luis Severino struck out nine in 4 2/3 innings. He gave up four runs, eight hits and one walk.

Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the second on Luis Guillorme’s RBI single.

The Diamondbacks stretched the lead to 3-0 in the third when Pederson slammed a 415-foot homer to right. It was his 21st of the season.

Carroll hit an even longer blast in the fourth. He jumped all over Severino’s fastball and hit a 440-foot shot to center.
