Report: Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa to practice this week, eyes Week 8 return

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is expected to return to practice on Wednesday with the hope of playing in the team’s Week 8 game against the Arizona Cardinals, The Athletic reported Saturday.

The report comes five days after Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel told reporters that Tagovailoa is expected to return this season after the latter sustained his third concussion as a pro against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 12. Tagovailoa, 26, missed five games in 2022 because of a pair of concussions, including their loss to the Bills in the wild-card round.

McDaniel said Tagovailoa received encouraging feedback from a neurologist last week, during the team’s bye.

Miami has struggled mightily since Tagovailoa departed. The Dolphins (2-3) are averaging a league-worst 12.0 points per game.

Tyler Huntley is expected to get the start this week for Miami against the Indianapolis Colts (3-3).

The Dolphins selected Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and signed him to a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension in the offseason.

In his pro career, Tagovailoa has appeared in 55 games and is 33-20 as a starter. He has completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 13,122 yards with 83 touchdowns and 40 interceptions.
